Spanish conversation practice online: free and paid ways that work
You can practise Spanish conversation online for free through language exchange apps like Tandem and HelloTalk, online conversation groups and free AI tools, or pay for a tutor on italki or Preply or an AI conversation app. Progress is fastest when you mix them: low-pressure practice most days, and a real person once or twice a week.

Juntos publishes this page and is one of the options, so we have tried to be specific about what each route is good for, including the ones that have nothing to do with us. Competitor features were checked on their own sites in October 2026. Prices change often, so check each site before you pay.
All the options at a glance
| Option | Cost | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Language exchange apps (Tandem, HelloTalk) | Free to start | Real native speakers, casual chat | Few corrections; half the time is in English |
| Online conversation groups | Often free | Listening to several speakers, low pressure | You may speak for only a few minutes |
| Friends or a partner who speak Spanish | Free | Motivation, real relationships | They rarely correct you, and tired partners make impatient teachers |
| One-to-one tutors (italki, Preply) | Set by each tutor | A person who adapts to you | Scheduling; quality varies |
| AI conversation apps (Juntos, Speak, Praktika, Langua) | Free trials, then a subscription | Daily volume and instant feedback | Not the same as an unpredictable human |
| A general AI chatbot | Free tier | Self-directed practice on a budget | Only corrects you if you ask, tracks nothing |
Free ways to practise Spanish conversation online
Language exchanges
On Tandem you are matched with Spanish speakers who want to practise English, and you talk by text, voice notes, audio or video calls, with built-in correction and translation tools. HelloTalk works on a similar exchange idea. The deal is fair: you help with their English, they help with your Spanish. To get the most from it, agree on a split (30 minutes in each language), say which accent you want to hear, and ask your partner to correct one thing per conversation rather than everything.
Online conversation groups
Many libraries, cultural centres, universities and meetup groups run conversation hours by video call, often for free. A group is less intense than one-to-one, which makes it a good first step if you are nervous. The downside is time: with six people in a call, you might speak for five minutes.
Free AI practice
A general chatbot with a voice mode can be a decent partner if you tell it exactly what to do: speak Mexican Spanish, keep sentences short, correct every mistake and explain each one in English. It will not remember your mistakes or give you a path, so you bring the structure. Every Juntos account also starts with 7 days of everything, no card, including the AI tutor, voice calls and the role-play scenes below.
Free Juntos tools that need no account
- The Spanish grammar checker: write what you want to say before a call and see each mistake fixed and explained.
- The spell and accent checker and the verb conjugator.
- Spot the slip, a quick quiz on Spanish that says something you did not mean.
- Friend chat stays free after the trial: chat in Spanish with a friend while a coach flags mistakes for both of you.
Paid ways to practise
Tutors
italki and Preply let you book one-to-one lessons with professional teachers or conversation-focused community tutors, filter by country for the accent you want, and try a tutor with a discounted trial lesson before committing. Shorter lessons (30 minutes) are a good way to make weekly conversation affordable. Tell your tutor you want conversation, not a textbook, and send them a topic in advance.
AI conversation apps
AI partners are the cheapest way to get daily speaking volume with feedback. Speak and Praktika focus on guided conversation, Langua adds real podcasts and videos, and Juntos grades every sentence you write or say out of 100 with the fix and why. We compare them in detail on the best app to practise speaking Spanish. None of them replaces talking to people: they are where you get your mistakes out of the way first.
What to talk about: 27 role-play scenes
The hardest part of conversation practice is often knowing what to say. Juntos has 27 role-play scenes where the AI plays the other person and grades each of your messages. Each scene has a free page with the key phrases and the three mistakes English speakers make most; practising it with the AI, by text or by voice, is part of the 7-day trial and then Pro. A few to start with:
- Everyday: ordering at a café, buying fruit at the market, taking a taxi, explaining symptoms at a pharmacy.
- Social: making plans with a friend, a first date, watching fútbol with locals.
- Family: meeting your partner's parents, Sunday lunch, a video call with a grandparent.
- Awkward moments: sending back the wrong dish, saying no politely, recovering from a slip.
- Harder: booking by phone, talking about your job, a friendly debate.
The same scenes work with a tutor or exchange partner: send them the link and ask them to play the other role.
Phrases that keep a conversation going
Most conversations do not stop because of grammar. They stop because you did not understand, or could not find a word. These phrases buy you time:
| Spanish | English |
|---|---|
| ¿Me lo puedes repetir más despacio, por favor? | Can you say that again more slowly, please? |
| Perdón, no te entendí. | Sorry, I didn't understand you. |
| ¿Cómo se dice... en español? | How do you say... in Spanish? |
| ¿Qué significa...? | What does... mean? |
| A ver, déjame pensar. | Let me think. |
| O sea... | I mean... / In other words... |
| Es que... | The thing is... |
| ¿Lo dije bien? | Did I say that right? |
| ¿Y tú? | And you? (the easiest way to keep it going) |
How to structure a 30-minute session
- Five minutes of warm-up. Say three sentences about your day out loud before the call. Check any you are unsure of in the grammar checker.
- Twenty minutes on one topic. One situation, gone into deeply, beats ten topics touched once.
- Five minutes on corrections. Write down two or three mistakes and the correct version. These are your topic for next time.
Repeat the same topic with a different partner or a different level of difficulty. The second and third time is where the sentences start to come out on their own. For more on the mistakes English speakers make most, browse common Spanish slips.

How can I practise Spanish conversation online for free?
Use a language exchange app such as Tandem or HelloTalk, join a free online conversation group, or use a free AI chatbot with clear instructions. Juntos also gives every account 7 days of everything, including AI voice calls, with no card, and keeps friend chat free after that.
Is it better to practise with a tutor or an AI?
They do different jobs. AI is good for daily volume and instant corrections without pressure; a tutor notices things an app cannot and prepares you for real people. Many learners use AI most days and a tutor once a week.
What should I talk about in Spanish conversation practice?
Pick one real situation per session: ordering food, describing your week, making plans, talking about your job. Juntos has 27 role-play scenes with free phrase pages you can use with any partner.
How often should I practise Spanish conversation?
Little and often works best: 10 to 15 minutes of speaking most days, plus a longer conversation with a person once or twice a week.
What if I freeze in a Spanish conversation?
Learn a few phrases that buy time, such as ¿me lo puedes repetir más despacio?, a ver, déjame pensar and ¿cómo se dice...? Practising the same situation several times beforehand also helps the words come faster.
