The market is where numbers stop being theory. You ask the price per kilo (¿a cómo está? — the phrase locals use, not ¿cuánto cuesta?), you ask for half a kilo, you check whether the avocados are ripe, and then you do the thing English speakers dread: suggest a lower price without being rude. Latin American markets expect a little negotiation, especially if you are buying several things, but the tone matters more than the number.

Los aguacates son maduros. → Los aguacates están maduros. Ripeness is a stage, not an identity — estar.
Es mucho caro. → Es muy caro. / Está muy caro. "Very" before an adjective is muy; mucho goes with nouns and verbs.
Yo quiero descuento. → ¿Me hace un descuento?. A blunt statement sounds like a demand; the question form is how locals ask.
