Goodbye in Spanish: adiós sounds final, nos vemos doesn't
Adiós is for airports and last episodes. Everyday goodbyes are shorter and warmer.
Adiós means "to God", and it carries some of that weight: it's what you say when you won't see someone for a long time, or at all. Between neighbours, shopkeepers, friends, the daily goodbyes are nos vemos (see you), hasta luego (until later), hasta mañana, cuídate (take care), and in Mexico the very common ándale pues or órale, nos vemos.
The one to add to your repertoire is que te vaya bien / que le vaya bien: "may it go well for you". It's what a vendor says as you walk away, what a host says at the door, and it's the goodbye that makes you sound like you belong. The reply is igualmente or gracias, igual.
Chao is common too, especially in the south and with younger people, and bye in Mexico is perfectly normal. None of them is rude. The only one that sounds like you're leaving the country is adiós.
