Te quiero vs te amo: which I love you to use

Te amo to a friend you met last month isn't wrong, just a lot. Te quiero is the warm, everyday version.

You said
¡Te amo, amigo! Gracias por todo.
What it means: I love you deeply, my friend! Thanks for everything.
A local says
¡Te quiero mucho, amigo! Gracias por todo.
Love you, mate! Thanks for everything.
Why: Te amo is deep love, mostly for a partner or close family. With friends, say te quiero.
After a new friend helped you move flats in Monterrey
¡Te amo, amigo! Gracias por todo.
"Jaja, yo también te quiero, güey. Me debes unas chelas."

Spanish has two ways to say I love you, and they don't map neatly onto English. Te amo is the big one: deep, committed love, said to a partner, and in much of Latin America to parents and children too. Te quiero is warmer and lighter. Friends say it, siblings say it, couples say it every day. It's the one you'll use most, and the safe choice whenever you're not sure.

Te quiero looks like "I want you", which puts some learners off it, but said to a person it means affection, not desire. It grows with mucho: te quiero mucho is a lot of love, and in messages you'll see it shortened to tqm. Between friends te amo does happen, especially among younger people and often half joking, but from someone new it can feel like too much, too soon.

In a new relationship the order usually runs me gustas (I like you, I'm into you), then te quiero, and later te amo. Saying te amo early lands about the same as an early "I love you" in English. Whichever one you hear, the reply is easy: yo también (me too), or yo también te quiero. If someone says te quiero and you're not there yet, a warm ay, gracias is honest and kind.
