I agree in Spanish: estoy de acuerdo, not soy de acuerdo

Soy de acuerdo is the slip almost every English speaker makes in their first debate. It's an easy one to retire.

You said
Sí, soy de acuerdo contigo.
What it means: Yes, I am of agreement with you. (not Spanish)
A local says
Sí, estoy de acuerdo contigo.
Yes, I agree with you.
Why: Agreement is a position you're in, so it takes estar: estoy de acuerdo.
A language exchange in Mexico City
Sí, sí, soy de acuerdo contigo.
Your partner smiles. "Estás de acuerdo. Pero gracias."

English says I agree with a single verb, so learners reach for "I am in agreement" and pick the first "to be" they learned. But de acuerdo always takes estar: estoy de acuerdo, ¿estás de acuerdo?, no estamos de acuerdo. Soy de acuerdo doesn't mean something else, it just isn't Spanish, and it's one of the quickest ways a listener can tell you're translating in your head.

The logic: estar is for positions and states, where you are right now, and agreement is where you stand on a question. You can move. Ahora estoy de acuerdo (now I agree) and antes no estaba de acuerdo (I didn't agree before) both make sense. Add con to say who or what you agree with: estoy de acuerdo con Ana, estoy de acuerdo con la idea.

On its own, de acuerdo also means OK: ¿Nos vemos a las ocho? De acuerdo. That's correct, just a little formal. With friends in Mexico you'll hear sale, va or órale for plans, and for opinions, tienes razón (you're right) or exacto sound natural in conversation. Save estoy de acuerdo for meetings, debates and anything you'd say with a straight face.

Questions people ask

Is it soy de acuerdo or estoy de acuerdo?

Estoy de acuerdo. De acuerdo always takes estar, so soy de acuerdo is never correct.

How do you say I don't agree in Spanish?

No estoy de acuerdo. To soften it: no sé si estoy de acuerdo (I'm not sure I agree) or yo lo veo diferente (I see it differently).

How do you say OK or deal in Mexican Spanish?

Sale, va or órale. De acuerdo is understood and polite, but friends rarely use it for plans.
