Speak app alternatives for Spanish: AI conversation apps vs a tutor who teaches out loud

If you are looking at Speak, Praktika or Talkpal for Spanish, you want to talk, not tap. All three give you an AI to speak with. The real choice is between an AI conversation partner you practise with and an AI tutor who teaches you the lesson out loud, which is what Juntos's live lessons with Mateo (in beta) do.

Updated October 2026.

A note first: Juntos publishes this page and is one of the options. Speak, Praktika and Talkpal are all good at what they do, and we say where each is the better choice. Prices were checked in October 2026 on each company's US App Store listing or its own site; where we could not confirm one, we say "check current pricing". Prices change often and vary by country.

Two kinds of AI speaking practice

Most AI speaking apps are built around conversation practice: you pick a situation or topic, the AI plays the other person, and you get feedback during or after. That is excellent for getting over the freeze and building speed. The gap many learners notice is that conversation practice assumes you already know the Spanish you need. If you do not know why it is estoy cansado and not soy cansado, a chat partner can correct you, but it is not teaching you the rule step by step.

A taught lesson out loud works the other way round: the tutor introduces the point, asks you to say it, listens, corrects you and moves on when you have it, like a lesson with a teacher. Juntos's live lessons with Mateo (in beta) are built this way. Neither approach is better for everyone. Many learners want both, and none of them is a substitute for talking with real people.

The options, one by one

Speak

Best for: people who want structured speaking lessons and a lot of talking time. You speak from the first lesson, and Speak Tutor holds a back-and-forth conversation with real-time feedback on pronunciation and phrasing. Premium Plus adds lessons built around your goals and a study plan that targets your frequent mistakes. Price: Premium US$17.99 a month or US$83.99 a year; Premium Plus US$39.99 a month or US$164.99 a year on the US App Store (as of October 2026). Honest limit: no permanent free plan, the mistake-targeting features sit in the more expensive tier, and its help pages do not say which variety of Spanish it uses.

Praktika

Best for: learners who want the feel of talking to a person. Praktika uses animated AI avatars, and its App Store listing names Spanish tutors from Mexico and Spain. The avatars correct your grammar during the conversation, with explanations and feedback on pronunciation and fluency. Price: check current pricing; the App Store lists several plans and offers. Honest limit: it is conversation first, so if you also want a clear grammar path from beginner to advanced you may need something alongside it.

Talkpal

Best for: variety. Talkpal has call, sentence and word modes, roleplays, characters and debates, across many languages. Price: a free basic plan with a 10-minute daily limit; Premium US$19.99 a month or US$119.99 a year on the US App Store (as of October 2026). Honest limit: covering so many languages means less that is specific to Spanish, and it does not say which variety of Spanish its voices use.

Juntos Pro+ with Mateo (beta)

Best for: learners who want to be taught out loud, not just chat. Mateo is an AI tutor who teaches your next lesson from the Juntos program out loud, answers your questions mid-lesson and corrects you as you speak, in neutral Latin American Spanish (tú, ustedes, the phrases used in Mexico). Pro+ includes everything in Pro: the 12-track program from A1 to C1 where every answer is graded with the fix and why, the AI tutor and chat, voice calls, drills and pronunciation practice. Price: US$19 a month, with fair use up to 20 lessons a month. Every account gets 3 Mateo lessons free, so you can try him before paying, and the first payment has a 14-day money-back guarantee. Honest limits: Mateo is in beta. He can mishear you sometimes, and he is still being tested on iPhone: for now he works best in Chrome on a computer or on Android. Juntos is small and new, it has no human teachers, and it teaches Latin American Spanish only.

Juntos Pro, without Mateo

If you mostly want speaking practice with every sentence corrected, Pro may be enough. Its AI voice calls listen to you, reply out loud and grade each thing you say with the fix and why, and there are role-play scenes from the taxi to meeting your partner's parents. Price: US$8 a month or US$59 a year (save 38%), after a 7-day free trial with no card. The short grammar lessons, Sprint and Word Match games, the Error Bank and review cards stay free.

How to choose

Questions people ask

What is a good alternative to the Speak app for Spanish?

Praktika if you want to chat with an AI avatar, Talkpal if you want many modes and a free daily allowance, and Juntos if you want every answer graded with the fix and why, or live spoken lessons with Mateo (in beta) that teach your next lesson out loud.

Is Speak, Praktika or Talkpal better for Spanish?

They suit different people. Speak is the most structured, Praktika feels most like a video chat, and Talkpal has the most modes and a free daily allowance. Try each with the same task and keep the one whose feedback you use.

What is Mateo on Juntos?

Mateo is an AI tutor in Juntos Pro+, in beta. He teaches your next lesson out loud, answers questions mid-lesson and corrects you as you speak. Every account gets 3 lessons free; Pro+ is US$19 a month with fair use up to 20 lessons a month.

Does Mateo work on iPhone?

Mateo is still being tested on iPhone. For now he works best in Chrome on a computer or on Android. He can also mishear you sometimes, which is part of why he is still in beta.

Can an AI speaking app replace a Spanish teacher?

No. AI speaking apps are good for daily practice and instant corrections between or alongside lessons, but a human teacher notices things an app cannot and prepares you for real people.
