How much does a Spanish tutor cost in 2026? Online, local and AI options
As of October 2026, online Spanish tutors on italki charge about US$4 to US$60 an hour, Preply lists average rates of about US$25 to US$30 an hour, and local in-person tutors in the US often cost about US$23 to US$50 an hour. The price depends mostly on the tutor's experience, country and lesson length. AI practice costs far less, and works best between lessons rather than instead of a teacher.
Updated October 2026.
A note first: Juntos publishes this page and is one of the options, as an AI course for practice. We do not offer human tutors, and we think a good teacher is worth paying for when you can. Tutor prices below were checked in October 2026 on italki's and Preply's own Spanish tutor pages, Care.com's cost guide and Preply's blog. They are ranges, not quotes: each tutor sets their own rate, and prices vary by country and currency.
The short answer: typical prices in 2026
| Option | Typical price | Source (checked October 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| italki (online) | About US$4 to US$60 an hour; a 30-minute lesson typically US$4 to US$10 | italki's Spanish teachers page |
| Preply (online) | Average about US$25 to US$30 an hour, depending on the tutor's country; classes from about US$3 | Preply's Spanish tutors page |
| Local tutor, in person (US) | About US$23 to US$30 an hour as a national average on Care.com; Preply's blog puts in-person lessons at US$30 to US$50 an hour | Care.com cost guide; Preply blog (February 2026) |
| AI app for practice | About US$8 to US$40 a month, many with a free tier or trial | Each app's own pricing, see our AI tutor comparison |
So one hour-long lesson a week works out at roughly US$20 a month at US$5 an hour, US$100 a month at US$25 an hour, and US$200 a month at US$50 an hour.
What makes a Spanish tutor cheaper or more expensive
- Professional teacher or community tutor. On italki, professional teachers usually plan structured lessons; community tutors are native speakers who focus on conversation.
- The tutor's country. Preply's Spanish page lists different average rates for tutors from Mexico, Colombia and Spain.
- Lesson length. 30-minute lessons cost less per lesson and are often enough for conversation practice.
- Specialism. Exam preparation, business Spanish or a teaching qualification usually cost more.
- Online or in person. In-person tutors have travel time and local costs, so they tend to charge more than online tutors.
- Packages and trials. italki offers discounted trial lessons, and many tutors discount a block of lessons.
How to get more from each lesson
The hour with a tutor is the expensive part, so it pays to arrive ready to use it:
- Practise between lessons. One hour a week is not much speaking on its own. Ten to fifteen minutes a day of speaking practice means your tutor hears your real level, not your first warm-up of the week.
- Bring your mistakes. Keep a list of the slips you keep making (soy cansado, me gusta los tacos) and ask your tutor to drill them.
- Ask for conversation, not a textbook. If grammar can be learned from a course or app, use the lesson for what only a person can do: real conversation, follow-up questions and how you sound.
- Try 30-minute lessons twice a week instead of one hour once a week. Little and often usually sticks better.
Tutor or AI: what each is good for
| Human tutor | AI practice | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Per lesson, about US$4 to US$60 an hour online | Monthly, about US$8 to US$40, often with a free tier |
| Availability | Booked in advance | Any time, as often as you like |
| What it does best | Real conversation, culture, motivation, noticing how you sound and what you avoid | Daily volume, instant corrections, repeating the same point until it sticks |
| Limits | Price and scheduling; quality varies | Can mishear or miss nuance; not a real person |
The two work best together: AI practice most days, and a tutor once a week or whenever you can. If a tutor is not in your budget right now, AI practice keeps you speaking and corrected until it is, and free options such as language exchanges (see free and paid conversation practice) give you real people to talk to.
Where Juntos fits
Juntos is an AI Spanish course for English-speaking adults in neutral Latin American Spanish. It is practice, not a teacher. Free forever: short grammar lessons, the Sprint and Word Match games, the Error Bank of your own slips, review cards and public tools such as the grammar checker and Spot the slip. Pro, US$8 a month or US$59 a year after a 7-day free trial with no card: the full 12-track program from A1 to C1 where every answer is graded with the fix and why, the AI tutor and chat, voice calls, drills and pronunciation practice. Pro+ with Mateo, in beta, US$19 a month: everything in Pro plus live spoken lessons with Mateo, an AI tutor who teaches your next lesson out loud, answers questions mid-lesson and corrects you as you speak, with fair use up to 20 lessons a month. Every account gets 3 Mateo lessons free, and the first payment has a 14-day money-back guarantee.
Honest limits: Juntos is small and new and has no human teachers. Mateo is in beta: he can mishear you sometimes and is still being tested on iPhone (he works best in Chrome on a computer or on Android). It teaches Latin American Spanish only. If you can afford a tutor, use Juntos for the daily practice between lessons and bring your Error Bank to the lesson.
A sensible budget plan

Questions people ask
How much does a Spanish tutor cost per hour?
As of October 2026, italki says Spanish tutors charge about US$4 to US$60 an hour, Preply lists average rates of about US$25 to US$30 an hour, and local in-person tutors in the US often charge about US$23 to US$50 an hour.
Why are some online Spanish tutors so cheap?
Rates depend on the tutor's country, experience and lesson type. Community tutors who focus on conversation, and tutors in countries with lower living costs, often charge less. Try a discounted trial lesson before booking a package.
How many Spanish lessons a week do I need?
One or two short lessons a week is enough for many adults, as long as you also practise for 10 to 15 minutes most days between lessons.
Is an AI Spanish tutor a replacement for a human teacher?
No. AI is good for daily practice and instant corrections, and it costs less, but a human teacher notices things an app cannot. Use AI between lessons, or to keep practising while a tutor is not in your budget.
What is the cheapest way to practise Spanish with corrections?
Free tools first: a language exchange partner, free app tiers and the Juntos grammar checker. Paid AI apps cost about US$8 to US$40 a month; Juntos Pro is US$8 a month or US$59 a year.
