Babbel alternatives for Spanish: what to try when you want something different
The best Babbel alternative depends on what you want more of: for speaking try Speak or Praktika, for a real teacher italki or Preply, for Latin American Spanish beyond B1 Juntos, for listening Dreaming Spanish, and for a free daily habit Duolingo. Babbel is a solid structured course, so many learners keep it and add one tool for the skill it trains least.

A quick disclosure: Juntos publishes this page and appears in it. We have kept the list to tools we think are genuinely good, including several that do things Juntos does not. Features were checked on each company's own site in October 2026. Prices change often and vary by country, so we have left them out: check each site before you pay.
What Babbel does well
Babbel is one of the most respected language apps for good reasons. Before looking elsewhere, it is worth being clear about its strengths:
- It is a real course. Lessons are designed by language experts, build on each other, and come with clear grammar tips and vocabulary guides.
- It has two Spanish courses. Spanish (Mexico) and Spanish (Spain), so you can choose the variety you need.
- It reviews what you learn. A spaced repetition system brings vocabulary back before you forget it.
- It goes beyond lessons. Podcasts, articles, and Babbel Speak, an AI conversation partner that is still in beta.
- You can try it first. Babbel advertises a free first lesson and a free trial.
Why people look for an alternative
The Mexican Spanish course stops at B1
According to Babbel's help centre, its Mexican Spanish courses go up to B1, while European Spanish goes up to C1. If you are learning for a partner, a move or work in Latin America and want to go past intermediate, you will reach the end of the Latin American path sooner than you might expect.
You want to speak more
Babbel's lessons include speaking exercises, but much of the time you are completing dialogues and choosing answers. Babbel Speak adds AI conversation, and it is newer and lighter than the core course. If freezing in conversation is your main problem, you may want more talking time.
You want your own mistakes explained
Course exercises check the answer the lesson expects. Many intermediate learners need something different: feedback on sentences they build themselves, with the reason for each fix, and a way to stop repeating the same slips.
You want more real Spanish
Understanding native speakers at full speed needs hours of listening. A course alone rarely provides enough.

1. More speaking: Speak and Praktika
Speak has you speaking from the first lesson, with real-time feedback on pronunciation and phrasing and an AI tutor that holds a back-and-forth conversation. Praktika uses friendly AI avatars, including Spanish tutors from Mexico and Spain, that correct your grammar during the conversation. Trade-off: both are conversation first; if you liked Babbel's grammar notes, you may miss them. See our comparison of the best apps to practise speaking Spanish for more options.
2. A real teacher: italki, Preply or Babbel Live
Nothing replaces a person who can follow you, push you and notice how you sound. italki and Preply are marketplaces where you book one-to-one lessons and can choose a tutor from Mexico, Colombia, Argentina or Spain. If you like Babbel's teaching style, Babbel Live offers live classes with human teachers, sold separately from the app. Trade-off: lessons need scheduling and cost more per hour than any app, so most learners pair them with daily practice.
3. Latin American Spanish to C1, with every sentence corrected: Juntos
Juntos is an AI Spanish course for English-speaking adults in neutral Latin American Spanish (tú, ustedes, the phrases used in Mexico). Its 12-track program runs from A1 to C1, and every sentence you write or say to the AI tutor is graded out of 100 with the fix and why. Your recurring mistakes go to an Error Bank that shapes the next session. There are 27 role-play scenes (the market, the pharmacy, meeting your partner's parents), AI voice calls and games, and you can practise with a friend. Price: 7 days of everything, no card. After that, the grammar courses, games, friend chat, the Error Bank and free tools such as the grammar checker stay free; Pro (the program, AI tutor and chat, voice calls, drills) is US$8 a month or US$59 a year. Trade-off: Juntos is new and small, with a smaller library than Babbel. It is a web app with no App Store app yet, Latin American Spanish only (not for a move to Spain), with no human teachers and no offline mode.
4. Listening: Dreaming Spanish and LingQ
Dreaming Spanish is a library of videos at graded levels, from total beginner to advanced, built on learning by listening rather than drills, with teachers from Mexico, Colombia, Argentina, Spain and elsewhere. LingQ lets you read and listen to real content and save words as you go. Trade-off: input builds understanding, not speaking; you will still need to practise producing Spanish.
5. A free daily habit: Duolingo
If cost is the issue, Duolingo's core course is free and very good at getting you to practise every day. It teaches ustedes rather than vosotros. Trade-off: it is lighter on grammar explanations than Babbel and has you recognising Spanish more than producing it. Our Duolingo alternatives page covers where it falls short.
6. Audio for the commute: Pimsleur
Pimsleur's Latin American Spanish course is built on 30-minute audio lessons where you listen and answer out loud, which suits driving, walking or the gym. Trade-off: it is excellent for pronunciation and set phrases, and less suited to reading, writing or explaining grammar.
You might not need an alternative if...
- You are still enjoying it. Consistency matters more than the perfect app. Add to Babbel rather than replace it.
- You are learning European Spanish. Babbel's Spain course goes up to C1, which covers most learners.
- You are below B1. The Mexican course still has plenty to teach you, so the B1 ceiling is a later problem.
- You just need conversation. Keeping Babbel and adding a weekly tutor, or Babbel Live, may be all you need.
A combination that works
Most learners who reach real conversation use three things: a course for structure, input for their ear, and practice that makes them produce Spanish and corrects it. If Babbel is your course, add a listening habit and one source of corrected speaking. Before you switch anything, try the free Spanish grammar checker on a few sentences about your own week: if most of them come back with slips you did not know you were making, corrected practice is the gap to fill first.
